Transfer fair helps Eagles to take flight

Lauren Boyd, left, transfer admission counselor with the University of Mississippi, talks to Chakiya Smith, MCC sophomore, about the university’s deadlines for admissions. Meridian Community College sophomore Chakiya Smith made it a point to stop at the College's Transfer Fair before heading to her chemistry class.

A pre-pharmacy major, Smith wanted to ensure she had all she needed to transfer from MCC to the University of Mississippi seamlessly.

MCC offers its College Transfer Fair in the fall and spring semesters, where representatives from Mississippi and Alabama colleges, universities, and military units gather to provide information and resources for students who plan to continue their education. This spring there were 13 vendors.

"I love going to transfer fairs just to scope out what all information the schools have," said Smith, who had attended other events of its kind at MCC.

Students can learn about the programs, majors, and academic opportunities at the participating colleges and universities at the transfer fair. They can also receive information about scholarship opportunities and deadlines.

Lauren Boyd, a transfer admissions counselor from Ole Miss, said she had been to MCC's previous transfer fairs and found them advantageous for the schools and the students. "We can put a name with a face if they fill out applications," she said. "It’s really helpful for making connections with students."

Kelli Wallace, MCC director of housing and student activities, said MCC was proud to host this fair. “We're here to support our students as they explore their opportunities to continue their education," she said, adding, "we believe this is a valuable resource for our students, and we look forward to seeing their futures take flight."
