MCC to serve the community with My College Cares Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Meridian Community College students, faculty, and staff will trade classrooms for community service as they take part in the College’s annual My College Cares Day.

“This day is one of the most meaningful things we do at MCC,” said Marion Whiting, MCC’s director of housing and student activities and chair of the My College Cares Committee. “It’s more than a tradition, it’s part of who we are. Every year, our Eagles volunteer to meet needs, and it’s powerful.”

Some 45 community sites will welcome MCC volunteers this year, with hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and administrators expected to participate. From reading to elementary school children, painting murals, and planting gardens to performing music for retirement home residents, MCC’s Eagles will be out in force across Meridian and Lauderdale County.

Whiting added, “It’s inspiring to see our students take in giving back. They understand that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door.”

One student volunteer reflected on a past My College Cares experience:
“Being part of this day showed me how even a small effort, like reading a story or planting a flower, can make someone’s day brighter. It reminded me that I can make a difference.”

Additional members of the My College Cares Committee include Lowell Martin, Ellie Winter, Kristi Williamson, and Latoya Gray, who work behind the scenes to coordinate the College-wide effort.
