MCC community preps for My College Cares day of service

Meridian Community College students and employees will step away from classrooms and offices Tuesday, Oct. 6, to spend the morning serving organizations throughout Meridian and Lauderdale County.

My College Cares, MCC’s annual day of service, will bring together hundreds of students, faculty and staff for projects at 38 locations across the community from 8 a.m. to noon.

Volunteer teams will take on a wide variety of assignments, including picking up trash, sorting donated clothing, gathering first aid supplies, landscaping, painting and organizing. Some volunteers will also spend time entertaining residents with music at local nursing homes.

For Ellie Winter Williams, MCC’s interim director of housing and student activities, the event is an opportunity for the College community to make a visible difference while giving students a deeper connection to the place they call home.

“Each year, My College Cares gives our students and employees the chance to put service into action,” Williams said. “It is a day when we can come together as a College, meet real needs, and show our students that even a few hours of their time can have a lasting impact.”

Participants select a team and service location based on the projects available. Information about the work planned at each site helps volunteers choose an opportunity that matches their interests and abilities.

Over the years, My College Cares volunteers have taken on projects ranging from beautification and cleanup efforts to working with children and spending time with residents at senior living communities.

The impact, Williams said, extends beyond completing a project.

“Service puts students in places where they can meet people they may not otherwise meet and learn more about the community around them,” she said. “That experience can be just as meaningful as the work itself.”

Held each October, My College Cares reflects MCC’s longstanding emphasis on service and community involvement while connecting students and employees with organizations making a difference throughout Lauderdale County.
