MCC students, employees to serve community during My College Cares
Hundreds of Meridian Community College students, faculty, and staff are expected to fan out across Meridian and Lauderdale County on Tuesday, Oct. 6, for the College’s annual My College Cares day of service.
The event, scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, connects MCC volunteers with local organizations that need help with projects ranging from cleanup and landscaping to painting, organizing, and other service work.
Held each October, My College Cares allows members of the MCC community to work alongside local schools, nonprofit organizations and other groups.
“Each year, My College Cares gives our students and employees the chance to put service into action,” said Ellie Winter Williams, MCC’s interim director of housing and student activities. “It is a day when we can come together as a College, meet real needs, and show our students that even a few hours of their time can have a lasting impact.”
Volunteers sign up for a team and choose from available service locations. Each site will include information about the work planned so participants can select a project that best fits their interests and abilities.
Past projects have included picking up litter, planting flowers and gardens, painting, reading to children, and spending time with residents at local senior living communities.
Williams said the event also helps students build connections outside the classroom.
“Service puts students in places where they can meet people they may not otherwise meet and learn more about the community around them,” she said. “That experience can be just as meaningful as the work itself.”
