Reaching out to the community: My College Cares is Oct. 17

Get ready. Get set. Volunteer. Meridian Community College's annual campus-wide volunteer endeavor will be on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The College's long-standing tradition (going on 20-plus years), My College Cares, is a one-day event where the campus closes so students and employees venture out into the community and volunteer in tasks that range from cleaning, painting, organizing, gardening, and more.

This year, the MCCers will lend a helping hand to schools, assisted living facilities, community kitchens, parks, churches, and more.

Brandon Dewease, associate dean of student engagement, said My College Cares yields many purposes – but at its core is the service to others. With My College Cares, Dewease said, "We place the needs of others ahead of our own, we step out of our comfort zones, we extend a hand of fellowship to those around us, and we impact our community," he said.

Dewease knows the value of the day first hand for when he was a student at MCC; he volunteered during My College Cares Day. "Some of my fondest memories at MCC had taken place when My College Cares Day introduced me to new places, spaces, and faces,” he said.

But there's more to the event. "It’s highly unusual for a college to engage in a day of service, but it's a testament to our desire to impact the lives of our students in significant ways,” said MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner.

He added, “I'm thankful to be at a college that makes serving others a priority.”
