Ivy League Recruiters guide new students to find their wings during orientation
For Meridian Community College's Ivy League Recruiters, orientation offers opportunities to build on their college experiences and help others find their wings.
Take Otoniel Alonso and Kendrick Brown, who serve as student leadership ambassadors as Ivy League Recruiters for example. Alonso, 20, is a sophomore who wants to pursue a career in business, and Brown, 18, is a student in the College's University Transfer program. Both are from Collinsville.
At their latest orientation session, the two – along with 20 other Ivy Leaguers – assisted with registration, led tours, answered questions, and directed incoming MCC students in registering for the Fall Semester of 2024.
"This has been our fourth orientation," Brown said, adding that he enjoyed each experience, especially working with others.
MCC's orientation is a one-day event designed to help incoming students learn about campus, find their classrooms, meet College staff and faculty, and more.
Alonso added, "Being an Ivy League Recruiter is good. You get to experience so much and learn to open up. It's like getting ready for the real world. Plus, it boosts your confidence—you never feel nervous. You get to learn about careers, and as an Ivy League Recruiter, you know what's offered at MCC.
"You can help new students along the road," he said.
Members of the Ivy League again will assist others find their wings at the next orientation session on Friday, Aug. 16. The session begins with check-in from 8:30 to 9 a.m. in the McCain Theater.
