Johnson celebrated as MCC Humanities Teacher of the Year

Singing the lyric, “Is anybody waving out there,” Meridian Community College Anne Lacy Johnson opened her talk, “From Handprints on Cave Walls to Posting on Social Media: Seeking Validation Through Our Personal Narrative.”

Johnson, who serves as interim chair of the College’s Fine Arts division and is a speech instructor, made the presentation as a part of her being named Humanities Instructor of the Year at MCC. The Mississippi Humanities Council sponsors the Humanities Teacher of the Year Award, recognizing the outstanding work of the humanities faculty who have made significant advancements in the mission of the humanities in the state. The honoree presents a free public lecture as part of the award, and all state universities and community colleges honor a faculty member.

“The personal narrative is who we are. We all seek validation,” Johnson said to the McCain Theater audience as she showed images and spoke of students, faculty, and family members who have impacted her life by sharing their narratives with her.

Betty Lou Jones, a member of the Mississippi Humanities Council, applauded Johnson’s talk and work.
