Celebrating first-generation college students

First Generation
For the second year, Meridian Community College will recognize first-generation college students in a campus-wide celebration.

The event is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, and is to encourage and uplift those who are the first in their families to go to college, said Ashley Tanksley, MCC director of admissions. "If you’re the first student in your generation to go (to college), we're celebrating you," she said.

Dawn Wright, MCC psychology instructor, will be the guest speaker for the celebration that gets underway at 11 a.m. in the Quave Student Life Center. Wright holds a dual bachelor of arts degree in sociology and psychology, a master of science in counseling psychology, and an education specialist degree in leadership.

Light refreshments will be served, and there will be giveaways.

Tanksley noted that many students face obstacles getting into college and don't know how to navigate the collegiate waters. "It's our job to educate them. We want to take the opportunity to say congratulations. We know where you've been, but you can keep moving forward," she said.

The event is not only for students but also for staff, she added. "We're hoping to create a networking space for students to connect with other faculty and staff members who are also first-generation college students," she said.

Nov. 8 is National First-Generation College Celebration Day. The day marks the anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson signing the landmark Higher Education Act in 1965.
