MCC’s E.L.C. class learns about growing an engaged team

It may be a cliché but leaders aren’t born, they’re developed.

That’s the message shared by Kassi Rushing, a communications and people strategist, when she led the discussion on Behaviors of Inclusive Leadership and Growing an Engaged Team with members of Meridian Community College’s Eagles Leadership Convocation (E.L.C.).

E.L.C. is an academic year-long professional development and leadership program comprising 10 MCC faculty and staff members.

Leadership can be learned and cultivated through deliberate actions and experiences; in turn, leaders should know, trust, and empower their teams.

“You just don’t have to hope good teams happen. There’s a ton of science that teaches us what we can do as a team member or a team leader to create the highest levels of engagement for those who work for us and work with us,” Rushing said.

Rushing is the owner of Kassi Rushing Consulting and is a strategic partner, facilitator, and designated Thought Leader at the Business Learning Institute. She earned a bachelor of arts in communication with an emphasis in public relations from Mississippi State University and her master of science in corporate communication and public relations from Mississippi College. She holds her certificate in diversity and inclusion from the Yale School of Management.

Members of the E.L.C. class this term include Darren Bane, director of workforce development; Jaterra Hurst, women's basketball assistant coach; William Davidson, associate dean for institutional research; Casey Holladay, director of social media and events specialist; Phyllis Holladay, Eagles Scholars Program coordinator and mathematics instructor; Matthew Milner, director of videography and sports information; Jim Price, director of facilities management; Flora Sumrall, Business Office Management Technology Program and Accounting Technology Program coordinator and instructor; Crystal Webster, director of student accounts; and Marion Whiting, director of housing and student activities. MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner and Dr. Leia Hill, vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the MCC Foundation, are facilitators for E.L.C. Jaycee Butler, Lifetime Quest coordinator and Foundation events coordinator, is the assistant for the program.

The next ELC session is on March 4; Crisis and Meeting Management will be discussed.
