Practice makes perfect: Emergency responders take to the Damon Center pool
Local emergency personnel dove into skill-building exercises when they recently practiced in Meridian Community College's Damon Fitness Center pool.
Wade Heggie, fitness center director, said the college's pool, which has a depth of 10 feet, has again served as a site to practice diving exercises that simulated emergencies.
Heggie said personnel were able to sharpen their skills and enhance their emergency response capabilities. Otis Barrett, director of Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency (LEMA), added, "We're practicing here at the pool because the lakes around here are so murky, you can't see. If we practice this and improve our skills in our clear water when we get into a situation with limited light and visibility, we'll know how to get each other out in situations."
Exercises included entangled diver rescue, evidence recovery, underwater gear removal, and reassembly.
