As a class assistant, Alexis Crawford is helping youths craft memories thanks to Meridian Community College's summer program, College 4 Kids.

The class is one she experienced more than a decade ago.

MCC's College 4 Kids is geared for 6-12-year-olds to come to campus to learn and have fun.

Brandon Dewease, associate dean for student engagement, said the program's effects are far-reaching. "Our belief in the power of education stems from the joy it brings to students. We want to open their eyes to opportunities and create a remarkable, memorable experience," he said.

Crawford, 22, an alumna of MCC who is now a law student at Mississippi College, participated in one of the earliest College 4 Kids sessions in 2006. “I still have a whole bag of crafts that I've made in all of my College 4 Kids classes," she said. And her favorite sessions were ones taught by BJ Hatten, a local artist, and owner of North River Studio Stained Glass Art and Gifts.

A chance encounter two years ago brought the former pupil and teacher together. Recalling their past connection, Hatten struck up a conversation, asking Crawford about her plans for the summer, and Hatten extended the offer to become her helper. "This was the class that I did with Miss BJ when I was in College 4 Kids," Crawford said as she assisted a youngster glue wings on a wooden stick butterfly in the Fairies, Flora, and Fauna session.

So, why does Crawford continue to lend a helping hand at College 4 Kids? “I love kids. I think they are the sweetest things ever. And I love crafting," she said. Hatten is happy to have Crawford's assistance. “The kids love her, and she’s very talented. I realized that when she took my class, and I wanted her back. I'm very fortunate that she's given me two years, but I'm afraid law school will win out," she added.

Crawford is also doing an internship this summer and said she's fortunate to schedule in College 4 Kids. "Hopefully, during the next two years of law school, I'll have that leeway," Crawford said.

Hatten added, “That will be great for me."

The second and final week of College 4 Kids 2023 begins today, Monday, June 12. For more information about College 4 Kids, visit meridiancc.edu/college4kids.
