Meet: Alexa Shirley

Alexa ShirleyAlexa Shirley is gearing up for her college journey combining soccer skills, community service, and academic drive.

A midfielder for the Lady Eagles Soccer team, Shirley played soccer throughout high school and initially thought she was finished with the sport until her team finished its championship game. "I was like, 'I don’t think I'm done. I don't feel like it's over for me,'" she said, remembering her decision to continue to play the sport

Her passion for soccer runs deep. "I love it. If I'm not playing a game, I'm refereeing a game or watching my sisters play. It's been a part of my life for a long, long time," she said.

Shirley, an 18-year-old freshman from Collinsville, is excited to be on campus at MCC, a place she's known since her dad, Myke, teaches in the Construction Trades Program. And Shirley was a dual enrollment/dual credit student.

Academically, Shirley is in a position for success. She plans to pursue a business and marketing major, but Shirley's ultimate goal is to become a lawyer. "Being an attorney seems really interesting," she said.

When she's not on the pitch or running to prepare for the next game, Shirley has a passion for helping. "I love to volunteer around my community. It gives me purpose; I like to help other people," she said. One way she lends a helping hand is by being a member of the College's student recruiting team, the Ivy League.
