NAS Meridian Commander Capt. Luke Davis honors military service at MCC's Veterans Day celebration
Commanding Officer NAS Meridian Capt. Luke Davis addresses the Veterans Day audience.
Everyone – both past and present - who has served and contributed to the military
is critical to its success, said Capt. Luke Davis, NAS Meridian commander, when he
presented the keynote address at Meridian Community College's Veterans Day Celebration.
"No matter their role, their contributions were and are important. It is an amazing team, and everyone has an important role," Capt. Davis said.
The event, held at Graham Gymnasium, recognizes college and community military personnel and showcases MCC's commitment to supporting military members. Veterans Day, Capt. Davis noted, "It is a great day to acknowledge and show appreciation for the people who have had the courage to serve our country."
A highly decorated naval aviator, Capt. Davis brings a distinguished career spanning over two decades of service. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he earned his wings at NAS Meridian. His career includes multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, strategic roles in Japan, and stateside posts advancing tactical training and program management for advanced naval aviation technology.
In offering advice to MCC students who may consider a military career, especially those interested in aviation and technology, Capt. Davis said, "It is a rewarding career, very dynamic, challenging and brings many unique experiences. To succeed, you must be committed and believe in yourself. The training is second to none and leads to interaction with some of the most advanced aircraft and technology in existence."
Also, during the ceremony, which opened with the presentation of colors by Naval Air Station Meridian Color Guard, the Roll of Honor, led by Mitch Brantley, division chair of communication and fine arts, was presented. MCC student Payton Alexander sang "God Bless America," and MCC students and veterans Kriston Broom and Dorcia Mayer presented the welcome and introduction of the speaker, respectively. Dansby Broach, an MCC student and a member of the National Guard, led the Pledge of Allegiance, while Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Dr. Cedric Gathings offered a special recognition. Kristi Williamson, director of library services, gave the invocation. Christopher King, director of bands, played the National Anthem on the trumpet, and Daniel Boles served as Alexander's accompanist. Shaquita Alfonso, associate director of military and veterans services, was emcee for the ceremony.
In his closing remarks, MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner thanked veterans – especially active duty military personnel who decide daily to embody the values of pride, heroism, service, gratitude, freedom, peace, and justice. He said America is about ideals and values. "And the men and women who serve our country reflect those values and live those values every day. If we're not grateful, we should be."
