MCC literary magazine moves into design phase

Meridian Community College’s literary magazine, The Scribbler, is moving into its next phase as judging concludes and work begins on the magazine’s design.
This year’s theme is fate, a concept that editor Amy LaFleur said guided the submissions. LaFleur oversees the Scribbler; she is also assistant librarian at the College.
Judges are finishing their reviews, and selected entries will soon be shared with students in MCC’s Graphic Design Technology Program, who will design the digital magazine. “This year, writers really stayed focused on the theme,” LaFleur said. “That gives the design students a clear direction as they start their work.”
Submissions for this edition were open to students in grades 10 through 12, MCC and Mississippi State University Meridian students, and community members age 18 and older. Writers submitted poetry, short stories, and creative nonfiction essays.
LaFleur said she is eager to see how the design students interpret the theme. “I always enjoy seeing what the students create,” she said. “They bring a fresh perspective to the writing.”
Many of the submissions for this year’s publication were poems.
An awards ceremony is being planned for later in the semester and monetary prizes will be presented, with funding provided by the MCC Foundation. First, second, and third place winners will receive $75, $50, and $25. Honorable mentions may also be published.
The Scribbler continues a long tradition at MCC. Past versions of the literary magazine date back to the 1950s and were published under names such as Prattle and Plot, The Apocalypse, and Literary Review. Over the decades, the magazine has featured work from high school students, college students, and community writers.
With its new name and digital format, The Scribbler is reaching a wider audience. “We wanted a fresh start while still honoring the past,” LaFleur said. “It is about giving people a place to share their voice.”
The finished digital magazine is expected to be released online in late spring 2026.
