Meet: Taylor Wilkerson

Freshman Taylor Wilkerson, 19, from Clinton, chose Meridian Community College for her academic start after researching the College on the internet.

“I saw they had a dance team, and I wanted to be on it,” she said, remembering she contacted MCC Coach Angie Partridge to learn more. “I got to come to one of the dance clinics, and now I’m on the team,” she said of her journey to MCC.

Despite being new to dance – her previous experience was on her high school color guard team – Wilkerson feels comfortable with the small team of dancers. “It’s more one-on-one, making learning easier,” she said.

Balancing her 17-hour course load, work at the Student Success Center, and her spot on the dance team keeps Wilkerson busy. She enrolled in three courses this summer to get a head start on her academics.  She plans to study in the Associate Degree Nursing program.

Driven by a passion for helping others – and being influenced by her mom, a social worker, Wilkerson has volunteered at healthcare facilities, including nursing homes. “And I like seeing a smile on the patients’ faces and being able to help them,” she said.

Something else she likes? The people at MCC. “They’re nice, and they want you to succeed.”

Wilkerson encourages others to take a chance on MCC. “Just try it. I didn’t know what the school was about but took the risk and came. It’s been good.”
