MCC student finds a home away from home

For Abdel Hafid AIT Ouadil, known as "AB," Meridian Community College has been a place of opportunity and support as he adjusts to life in the United States.

The 26-year-old from Morocco lives in Elliott Hall and is enrolled in 21 credit hours this fall semester. While completing pre-requisites, AB plans to pursue a career in practical nursing but is still deciding where he will continue his nursing studies after MCC.

"The College is more convenient for me," AB said. "Coming to the States for the first time, I needed to find a place to stay and eat. MCC provides that, so I don't have to worry."

Beyond academics, AB appreciates MCC's facilities that help him stay active and healthy. "I like the gym, the swimming pool, the track, and the soccer field. I play soccer back home, and it's great that these are free for students," he said.

AB has also formed strong friendships, "People here are more social."

He credits his uncle for encouraging him to study in the U.S., where AB's English skills and previous bachelor's degree made him a strong candidate. Initially deterred by the cost, AB discovered community colleges affordably. After researching, he chose Mississippi for its affordability and found MCC. After talking with MCC Registrar Deborah Oldham, AB found his home away from home at the College.

"I'm very happy here," AB said, noting that his schedule keeps him focused. He plans to remain at MCC for the spring semester and looks forward to spending Thanksgiving with friends.

While his plans for the Fall 2025 semester remain uncertain, AB is grateful for the opportunities MCC has provided. "This has been the right place for me," he said.
