Fair offers students to get taste of real life

Lauderdale County eighth graders learn financial lessons during the recent Realty Fair held at the MCC-Riley Workforce Development Center.

Some 500 Lauderdale County School District eighth graders got a reality check when they came to Meridian Community College Riley Workforce Development Center for a unique interactive learning opportunity.

The Reality Fair provided students the chance to experience some financial challenges they may face as they become adults and start life on their own. They were given scenarios in which they had a pretend family, job and salary and they were to move about from booth to booth making decisions about housing, transportation, groceries and utilities.

Local credit unions and businesses were sponsors as was the College’s Workforce Development Center.
