Racing for others: College hosts run, walk, street strut and car show

Race ambassadors Mary Eades, Barbara Burnett, Mack Phillips and Donna Creel were honored during the event.

Meridianite Krystal Harris made it a point to come to Meridian Community College's track early on a brisk Saturday morning.

Wearing black leggings and a specially made pink shirt with names written on the back, Harris came to honor family and friends who have battled breast cancer.

Harris and hundreds of others did that and more when the College hosted the annual Queen City Race for Life and Street Strut at the MCC Track. This was the third year the event was held on the College's campus. Also, this was the first year for the Queen City Car Show, which was held in front of Ivy-Scaggs Hall.

The events spotlighted the renewal of the commitment to fighting breast cancer; it also served to raise awareness and support those affected by breast cancer, said Phyllis Holladay, MCC math instructor and event organizer. Proceeds from the day's activities were earmarked for the Anderson Cancer Patient Benevolence Fund.

"This has been a great turnout," said Cindy Kane, an MCC alumna and an organizer of the event. She joined with Holladay more than 10 years ago to start this race in honor of her sister Judy Bounds. Now, the event is held in Bounds' memory.

"The support has been phenomenal, as it is every year. We are so thankful for the people who support us,” Kane added. "And I'm thankful for MCC; this is wonderful for our community.”

As a part of the race, ambassadors were celebrated for their fights against breast cancer, and this year's class, Barbara Burnett, Donna Creel, and Mary Eades, were recognized. Mack Phillips was also saluted as a caregiver ambassador.
