MCC honor society earns PTK nod
The Phi Theta Kappa international academic honor society chapter at Meridian Community College earned the organization’s Recognizing Excellence in Acceptance and Completion with Honors Award (REACH) for excelling in membership development.
MCC’s Nu Upsilon Chapter was applauded for its membership development endeavors with the REACH Rewards program. The chapter has received the award multiple times.
“We created this program because we believe strongly in the mission of Phi Theta Kappa and want as many students as possible to receive the benefits of membership — including scholarships and increased opportunities for engagement with peers and faculty on campus — which lead to higher rates of completion,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, PTK president and CEO.
Phyllis Holladay, MCC PTK advisor, said the local chapter aspires to improve. “"We are excited to receive the REACH Award again this year. We continue to encourage students to join Phi Theta Kappa and share the benefits that it affords them, but we are always striving to do better. We never want students to miss out on an opportunity that they have worked hard to achieve."
As a REACH reward, graduation stoles denoting their PTK membership are given to PTK chapters. Nu Upsilon received 14 stoles.
Ninety-one percent of Phi Theta Kappa members will complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college, compared to just 31 percent of students nationally. Members have access to millions of dollars in scholarships — $1 million in competitive scholarships through the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and more than $246 million in transfer scholarships to over 850 four-year colleges.
