One hundred and seventeen Meridian Community College students were installed as new members of the Nu Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during a ceremony held in the McCain Theater.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international academic honor society for community and junior colleges. The organization promotes leadership, scholarship, service, and fellowship. Membership is open to any student who has earned 12 semester hours and has a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. MCC hosts the Nu Upsilon chapter.

Guest speaker Dr. Barbara McMillian, president of Blue Mountain Christian University, congratulated the inductees noting that becoming a member of PTK is a high honor and an affirmation of their commitment to academic excellence.

Dr. McMillian also shared with the audience that being prepared requires having an ample supply of intellectual virtues. She explained writer Philip E. Dow, author of “Virtuous Minds,” explored the theory that intellectual virtues include courage, carefulness, tenacity, fair-mindedness, curiosity, honesty, and humility.

"You have thinking habits. What are good thinking habits? They're also called the intellectual virtues," she said.

MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner said PTK inductions are always exciting for him. "I get to stand in front of the best and the brightest, and I encourage you that no matter who you are or where you are, you set the bar high. You can achieve the goals you want to achieve," he said.
