Meridian Community College Precision Machining Engineering Technology Program students and Mississippi State University mechanical engineering students joined in Design Build Collaboration Challenge for ProjectMFG, a Department of Defense initiative.

The result: Together, they built a cervical retractor for use in spinal surgeries for the Flowood company, Zavation, which designs, develops, manufactures, and distributes medical musculoskeletal implant devices across various spinal products.

Brian Warren, MCC Precision Machining Engineering Technology Program coordinator and instructor, said the project gave students hands-on engineering and manufacturing experience while fostering teamwork and collaboration.

With donated 17-4 stainless steel from Fort Walton Machining in Florida, these students could make their drawings and CAD models a reality.

"Each group of students brought a unique skill set to the table. This project exemplifies how industry and education can work together to prepare students for success in the workforce," he added.
