Picture this: Contest captures 'Picture Perfect Chemistry' for National Chemistry Week
With cameras in hand and creativity in mind, Meridian Community College students, faculty, and staff answered the call for submissions for the National Chemistry Week's "A Walk in Nature" competition.
Held under the auspices of the American Chemical Society, the contest drew 60 submissions from students and employees, each capturing interpretations of the science-inspired theme, said Dr. Angie Carraway, chemistry instructor and division chairman of the science and wellness division.
Two off-campus art professionals served as judges, reviewing entries in the categories of General Students, Art Students, and College Employees. In the General Student category, Angelia Taylor took first place, with Cameron Smith and A'Lexis Ott placing second and third. Alondra Arreola-Espino received an honorable mention for her work.
Among the art students who used the process of cyanotype, a photographic printing technique that produces a cyan-blue image without a camera, Justin Ramirez claimed the top spot, followed by Adarius Hamble and Emma Hall. Dawn Wright won first place in the College Employee division, Janet Parrett took second, and Erika Stokes placed third. Parrett also received an honorable mention for an additional submission.
The photography works are currently displayed in the L.O. Todd/Billy C. Beal Student Success Center.
