MCC’s PTK chapter installs new members

One hundred and seventy-four Meridian Community College students were installed as new members of the Nu Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) during a ceremony held in the McCain Theater.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international academic honor society for community and junior colleges. The organization promotes leadership, scholarship, service, and fellowship. Membership is open to any student who has earned 12 semester hours and has a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

In his address to the new PTK members, guest speaker MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner shared that the induction ceremony is a favorite of his. “It’s not just about honor cords, certificates, or membership pins; it’s about discipline; it's about persistence. It’s about the decision each one of you has already made to pursue excellence when the average would have been easier,” he said.

PTK represents the highest level of community college scholarship in this country, and nationally, only a small percentage of students meet the academic threshold required for invitation, Dr. Huebner noted. “You have done more than enroll; you have excelled, and that distinction matters,” he said.

Dr. Huebner continued: “You are examples whether you intend to be or not. You are role models; younger siblings are watching, classmates are watching. Your communities are watching.”

“You’re going places, and it's going to be awesome to see you go and get there,” he added.
