In a world of constant notifications and endless to-do lists, finding focused, uninterrupted time for creative work is critical, and having the dedicated time to immerse yourself in creative thinking can make all the difference.

For Meridian Community College Art Instructor Terrell Nicholson-Taylor, who is also the curator for the MCC Casteel Gallery, being invited to the Mississippi Art Colony’s Art fall session was impactful.

“My colleagues persuaded me to accept the invitation,” she said about the Colony’s workshop.

Listed as the country’s oldest artist-run organization of its kind, the Mississippi Art Colony is an invitation-only community providing arts learning experiences for adult artists. According to the group’s website, by providing week-long practicum experiences twice a year with a qualified facilitator, its goal is to help Mississippi artists develop their artistic abilities, build their professional skills, build community with other artists, and ultimately keep the arts scene thriving in Mississippi.

“I am so grateful for having the designated time and the company of inspiring artists,” said Nicholson-Taylor about the session. “With early mornings and late nights, I was able to put together a new collection of hardboard panels that use photo transfers of tiny botanicals that are hand-painted,” she said.

In each image, she creates forms that express her enchantment of nature, her garden, and a record of a mood or whim. “A kind of Vanitas of my life,” she explained. “I can only hope that others can enjoy the beauty that I see, and would like to share.”

One of her artworks has been included in the Colony’s traveling exhibit, which will be displayed in galleries and museums across the state.
