Music on the holiday horizon at MCC

The season of giving will be filled with the gift of music as two Meridian Community College ensembles present festive performances on Dec. 4 and Dec. 7.

MCC’s Music Department will host its annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, Dec. 4, followed by the Holiday Band Jubilee on Sunday, Dec. 7. Both events are free and open to the public and will take place in the McCain Theater.

The Christmas Concert begins at 7 p.m. and will showcase the talents of the Guitar Ensemble, the Concert Choir, and the Dimensions Ensemble. Performances will be led by Guitar Ensemble Director Mitch Brantley; Dimensions Ensemble Director Tammy Miles; and Concert Choir Directors Tammy Miles and Twyla Hurst.

The evening opens with a processional of O Come, O Come Immanuel, featuring cellist Daniel Boles. Audiences will also enjoy familiar favorites from the Dimensions Ensemble, including Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, highlighted by a bass solo from Matthew Jackson.

A community carol sing-along will invite attendees to add their voices to beloved selections such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Joy to the World, The First Noel, and Silent Night. The Concert Choir will close the program with cheerful classics, including Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland.

The celebration continues on Dec. 7 as the Screaming Eagle Community Band and Resurrection Jazz Band present festive arrangements of holiday standards. MCC’s own Tommy Winston, known as the voice of the “Find Your Wings” campaign, will narrate ’Twas the Night Before Christmas alongside the band. And of course, Santa will make an appearance—swinging along to lively holiday charts from the jazz ensemble.
