Scholarship opportunities for future physicians

The need for physicians and dentists to serve in rural areas of Mississippi was highlighted when Steven Carter from the Mississippi Rural Physicians and Dentists Scholarship Program spoke to Meridian Community College students on a recent visit to the MCC campus.
The Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program, created by the Mississippi Legislature and managed by the University of Mississippi Medical Center, provides financial support for medical students, covering tuition or helping with student loans. In return, recipients commit to practicing in Mississippi for one year for every year they receive the scholarship. A similar program for dentists was introduced to encourage them to serve in the state’s rural areas.
The program aims to address Mississippi’s healthcare shortage, with statistics showing that half of the state’s residents live in medically underserved counties.
