College’s MLK celebration set Jan. 18

Meridian Community College will host its annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebrations on Thursday, Jan. 18, with the theme Empowering the Dream Through Hope, Courage and Unity.”

The event begins at 1 p.m. in the College’s McCain Theater in Ivy-Scaggs Hall. Admissions are free of charge, and campus and community members are invited.

“Every year, our college takes great pride in hosting this tribute. It brings our campus and community together to commemorate the profound impact of Dr. King’s legacy on the civil rights movement and on our nation as a whole,” said Marlo Turner, MCC payroll manager and diversity coordinator.

For this year’s program, educator, pastor, writer, and consultant Jason Gibson will deliver the keynote address. Gibson is the department chair and assistant professor of history at Tougaloo College, and his research interests include the evolution of the Civil Rights Movement as a theory and practice.

The program will include the recognition of the winners of a creative contest; first-place winners will read their winning essays during the ceremony. The MLK Program scholarship will be presented by the Charles L. Young family, and the Billy C. Beal Award winner will be announced.
