Murphy named MCCer of the Month for October

Jan Murphy enjoys the people she meets each day as store manager of Meridian Community College's Eagle's Nest Bookstore, and it’s her dedication to students and the college has earned her the title of MCCer of the Month for October.

Sponsored by the MCC Foundation, the MCCer of the Month Award recognizes employees who go beyond their regular job duties. Recipients are nominated by their colleagues and receive a plaque and $250.

Murphy, who has worked at MCC for four and a half years, said one of her favorite parts of the job is watching students grow from their first days on campus to graduation.

"Many come into the bookstore when they first come on campus, and we see them often while they pursue their degree," she said.

Murphy and her staff get to know students through daily visits, conversations and shared milestones. Seeing those students graduate has become even more special now that commencement ceremonies are held on campus again.

"We are so proud of their hard work and all they have accomplished," she said.

Brandy Hill, associate vice president for operations and foundation finance, who is Murphy’s supervisor, praised Murphy's work ethic and willingness to take on new challenges.

"Whether she's finding new opportunities for the bookstore, helping a student, or coordinating our annual Candy Cruise, Jan gives it her all," Hill said. "She's a tremendous asset to MCC, and we're fortunate to have her on our team."

Colleagues who nominated Murphy praised her leadership, attention to detail and commitment to students.

"Jan leads with integrity, professionalism, and genuine care for both our students/customers and our team," one colleague wrote.

Another colleague noted that Murphy considers one question when making decisions: "Is this right for the student?"

Murphy said she is motivated by doing her best and helping others succeed.

"I believe that my results are a reflection of myself, my family, our store and the college, and I want it to be a good one," she said.

A Meridian native and Clarkdale High School graduate, Murphy earned an associate degree from MCC and bachelor's and master's degrees from Mississippi State University-Meridian. Her first job was as a salesperson at Traditional Jewelers in Village Fair Mall.

Murphy and her husband have been married for 24 years. They have three adult children and five grandchildren. She counts becoming a mother and grandmother among her most memorable life events.
