Espey named MCCer of the Month for April

Albert Espey has spent much of his life building things with his hands.

At Meridian Community College, his work can be found across campus in cabinets, construction projects, remodels, stage work and other jobs that call for skill, care, and effort.

Espey, a carpenter, has been named MCCer of the Month for April. The award is sponsored by the MCC Foundation and honors employees who go above and beyond their regular duties. Honorees are nominated by their peers and receive a plaque and $250.

Espey has worked at MCC for 13 years. A Meridian native and graduate of Northeast High School, he said carpentry was his first job. It continues to be the work he enjoys most. “My old-school work ethics and my love of carpentry” are what motivate him, Espey said. He also enjoys “looking back and seeing what I have built.”

His colleagues said that pride in his work is clear.

One nominator praised Espey for his work ethic and his ability to complete projects, even when deadlines are tight. The colleague noted that he has built cabinets for new construction and remodels across campus, often finishing the work ahead of schedule. “Albert always does his job with pride in his workmanship. He is always willing to help where help is needed,” the nominator said.

Jim Price, director of facilities management and Espey’s supervisor, said Espey’s influence reaches beyond his job title.

“Albert inspires everyone he comes into contact with from his work ethic to his commitment to family,” Price said.

Another co-worker described Espey as a mentor, teacher, and positive influence who helps others improve their work. The colleague said Espey offers guidance in a way that helps, rather than discourages. “This is just the way that he makes me a better person and therefore a better employee for Meridian Community College,” the colleague said.

Espey is also known for supporting the arts at MCC including the plays, guitar performances, and other campus programs. He also has helped with work on the stage and props for theater productions. When the art gallery changes exhibits colleagues said Espey often encourages others to go see the new work.

The most enjoyable part of his job? Espey said it’s “the people I work with and being able to use my carpentry skills.”

And he follows the philosophy: “Try to live by the word of God.”

Married his high school sweetheart, Espey and his wife have two daughters and five grandchildren, three boys and two girls.
