Whether building relationships with clinical agencies or embracing new technology in the health information industry, Samantha Shelby's focus remains constant: helping students reach their potential.

Shelby, who has worked at Meridian Community College for four years as a Health Information Technology Program instructor, is MCCer of the Month for February.

The MCC Foundation sponsors this peer-nominated monthly award representing faculty and staff members who are difference-makers. To be selected, the recipient must be a current member of the MCC Foundation and have been employed by the College for at least two years. Recipients are given a $250 honorarium.

Shelby's supervisor, Rebecca Higginbotham, HIT Program coordinator and health division chairman, said Shelby is worthy of the designation and a great asset to the program and division. "Samantha takes student success seriously and works extra hard to ensure her students learn the content needed to succeed in the real world. This includes making professionalism a priority," Higginbotham said.

Shelby is an alumna of MCC, earning her associate degree in 1998, and landed her first job as an inpatient coder at Anderson Regional Medical Center.

Today, her focus is on students. She acknowledges the best part of her job is helping students grow in their knowledge of Health Information Technology. In fact, she cites a memorable event in her life as "the sense of pride I felt learning that we had a 100 percent pass rate for our students that sat for their national exam my first year."

Others see her dedication. "Samantha is a great communicator; students know they can come to her with questions and concerns and get answers.  She takes her job seriously and works very hard to ensure she is prepared for class and that her courses are organized in the best way possible for student success," said a nominator.

Higginbotham added, “One reason that Samantha is a great instructor is that she focuses on activities that boost student success, such as utilizing additional technology in the classroom to enhance learning for both face-to-face and online students."

When she's not at the College, this Enterprise native enjoys spending time with her family.
