Jan Freeman Named MCCer of the Month

At the MCCer of the Month announcement celebration are Dr. Tom Huebner, Tonya Crenshaw, Michael Thompson, Susie Johnson, Jan Freeman, Christy Williamson, Erica Stokes, Dr. Leia Agnew Hill, Anita Floyd, and Holley Purvis.

For Jan Freeman, it’s all about the people.

Since joining Meridian Community College in September 2021, Freeman, assistant director of Arts and Letters, finds joy in the friendships she’s made on campus. “The best thing about MCC is definitely the friends and relationships I have cultivated since I've been here,” she said.

That sense of connection and community is what makes her work so meaningful — and why Freeman has been named MCCer of the Month for February. The MCC Foundation sponsors this monthly award to exemplify the College's hardworking employees who go above and beyond their day-to-day duties. Honorees are peer-nominated. Besides a commemorative plaque, recipients are gifted $250.

Freeman’s immediate supervisor, Susie Johnson, Arts & Letters Series director, credits her colleague for being a “consistent cheerleader for the entire MCC family.” Johnson explained, “If any department needs extra volunteers, she is there. Jan is easy to work with, and she does everything she can to make our world a better place,” Johnson said.

One nominator said, “Jan is always ready to lend a hand. ‘Not my department’ doesn’t exist in her vocabulary. She jumps in with a smile anytime she’s needed, and often because she sees a need.”

Born in Jackson, Freeman and her family moved about Mississippi before settling in Meridian during Freeman’s high school senior year. After high school, Freeman studied at MCC and played on the tennis team; she later transferred to the University of Mississippi and earned her bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts with a focus on interior design.

Freeman’s journey has been filled with meaningful connections and memorable moments, but she said nothing compares to the births of her three children, which she calls her most cherished memories.

She is married to her best friend, Tre, and they have been together for 30 years. Their family includes son Will, and daughters Mary Margaret and Catherine, both of who are studying at Ole Miss.

Freeman draws motivation from her family and friends, as well as her love for travel. Her favorite quote, from English writer and scholar J.R.R. Tolkien, reflects her outlook: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
