MCCer of the Month: Jerry Thigpen

At the MCCer of the Month celebration are Drew Edwards, Tim Cole, Dr. Leia Hill, Jim Price, Jerry Thigpen, Theresa Hogan, Cyndy Bratu, Brandy Hill, and Mike Hayes.

Jerry Thigpen has been on the job at Meridian Community College for nine years, helping to keep the facilities in tip-top shape.

He approaches his work as a custodian with joy and considers all MCCers his family. "He is always smiling, and he is willing to do today what he could put off until tomorrow," said a College colleague about Thigpen.

"This past year, Jerry has moved so much furniture and boxes due to all the renovation projects that MCC has in place and has had such a good, wonderful demeanor through it all," said another.

Because his friendly and helpful demeanor has made him a beloved figure among students and staff alike, Thigpen is MCCer of the Month for December. The MCC Foundation sponsors this monthly award to exemplify the College's hardworking employees who go above and beyond their daily duties. Honorees are peer-nominated. In addition to a commemorative plaque, honorees are given $250.

"I call everybody family," Thigpen said because he feels the people at MCC are his extended family. "I thank God for waking me up every day to enjoy life and for MCC, who made me a part of their family," he said.

A native of Morton, Thigpen is a graduate of Morton High School. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his family, including his wife and children. Following the mantra of treating others with respect, Thigpen can often be found taking on a new task and working with others.

"Jerry continues to be a great help with anything asked of him. He will work on weekends and come in for emergencies. He is also willing to help other employees throughout the campus and has an uplifting attitude," said another MCC staffer.

Drew Edwards, vice president for financial services and chief financial officer, echoes other MCCers’ comments about Thigpen. "We are all very happy that Jerry has received this recognition that he most certainly deserves. He is a model employee, and his hard work, dedication, and great attitude are an inspiration to us all," Edwards said.
