MCC Hall of Fame Inductee: Larry Gill

Larry Gill learned early that where you begin does not decide where you finish.

That lesson started at Meridian Community College. Now Gill will return to campus as a Hall of Fame inductee, honored by the school he says helped build his foundation.

Gill is one of four who will be honored for their achievements during the March 4 Hall of Fame ceremony. MCC recognizes a group of servant-leaders who have distinguished themselves in their professions and community service with the Hall of Fame award, which is sponsored by the MCC Foundation.

“Being inducted into the Hall of Fame at MCC is a full-circle moment,” Gill said. “This place believed in me before I fully believed in myself.”

Gill is serving his second consecutive term as Mayor of Marion; he was first elected mayor at the age of 26 and was among the youngest serving in a mayoral capacity in the state. He’s also a partner and inaugural general manager of the newly formed baseball team of the Meridian Blues, which is part of the Mid America League.

Born and raised in Meridian, Gill earned his MCC with an associate degree from MCC and his bachelor of arts degree from Mississippi State University-Meridian. He’s been a licensed insurance agent for 13 years since the age of 18 and is currently an agent at the Insurance Center of Meridian.

Gill noted he chose to get his start at MCC because it offered real opportunity and personal attention. “It was big enough to feel like a college campus but small enough to know your classmates and instructors,” he said. “That mattered.”

He was also a recipient of Tuition Guarantee, the MCC-Foundation's signature program that underwrites any tuition not covered by financial aid for graduates of Lauderdale County high schools and homeschooled grads.

At MCC, Gill said he gained more than just credits toward a degree. He learned discipline, accountability, and confidence. Faculty members pushed him to think bigger and work harder. “They didn’t just teach lessons,” Gill said. “They invested in students.”

One who shaped him was MCC Psychology Instructor Dawn Wright.

“She cared about our success, not just in her class, but across campus,” he said. “If we weren’t where we needed to be, she told us how to get there.”

His commitment to service later led him into public office. “Becoming Mayor of Marion is something I’m incredibly proud of – not because of the title, but because it allows me to serve people and create opportunities for others. But this moment, being inducted into MCC’s Hall of Fame, ranks right alongside that pride.”

Gill defines success in simple terms.

“Success to me is measured by impact – how many lives you help, how many doors you open, and whether you leave things better than you found them,” he noted.

Gill said the lessons he learned at MCC still guide him.

“It taught me how to show up prepared, how to lead, and how to persevere,” he said.

Gill and his wife, Rose, are the parents of two sons, Legend and Regal.
