MCC's Community Resource Fair provides support, opportunities

MCC student Lisa Keys meets Ray Gullette, business development representative with Alliance Health Center during the College’s Community Resource Fair. More than 30 vendors participated in the event.

Meridianite Lisa Keys has returned to Meridian Community College this fall to find her wings; she wants to become a registered nurse.

The 56-year-old has worked as a certified nurse assistant for 20-plus years and decided now was the time to move forward with her career goal. Her children are currently enrolled in the College's dual credit classes.

She was among the hundreds who visited the Fall 2024 Community Resource Fair held in Ivy-Scaggs Hall. To connect students to local resources and services, the College hosts this event where various community organizations and service providers come to campus. Visitors learn about resources available for education, healthcare, employment, and housing and talk with representatives from different agencies.

For the Fall 2024 fair, more than 30 agencies participated – an increase from last year.

"This is one of my favorite events," said Shaquita Hopson Alfonso, associate director of military and veteran services and C2C coach, about the fair, which the College hosts twice a year. “I love connecting people with resources that could impact their academic and personal growth," Alfonso added.

"Bringing in other people and resources makes a difference for our students," she said.

Nedra Bradley, executive director for family services and student support, noted the fair also serves as a channel to connect students who want to volunteer and community-based organizations looking for helping hands.

MCC student Keys said the fair was helpful to her; she was able to gain information about various organizations and their services.
