Career fair presents options for Lauderdale County students

Last October, Jesse Mixon was a high school senior taking part in the Mississippi Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) College and Career Fair for Lauderdale County students hosted by Meridian Community College by visiting tables and talking to college officials.

Now a freshman at MCC, Mixon shared his experiences with high school students as he helped staff the College's Fine Arts table at the College and Career Fair.

"This was a day for students to take the next step and to find their wings," said Mandy Hurtt, MCC director of recruiting, about the College and Career Fair. "We were proud to host this event, knowing we're helping students discover their paths to success."

More than 500 students, primarily high school seniors and some high school juniors, came to the College's campus to participate in this annual event. Approximately 50 educational institutions and military branches were among the vendors participating. Hurtt said this marks the third year for MCC to host the event.

Daylon Horton, 17, a senior at Northeast Lauderdale High School, was one of the students who participated in the fair. "I think this is cool. We have opportunities to see what we want to do and what colleges we want to attend,” he said of his experience.

Mixon recalled last year's session, noting he was undecided on a career. "I always loved the arts but never saw myself getting into it," he said. But when he stopped at MCC's Fine Arts table, he was captivated. "They told me about guitar, Dimensions, everything. They had me here the entire time I was at the fair," he said.

Now he's found his focus, and Mixon said his first year “is going good. I'm loving everything."
