Liftoff introduces new students to new semester

Holly Gillies looks around at the information booths during the latest orientation session, Liftoff.

At Meridian Community College's latest orientation session, Liftoff, Holly Gillies was among those new MCC students participating who found the event helpful.

"There is a lot of information," said Gillies as she paused between visiting campus facilities and gathering material. Though many students at Liftoff were from the East Central Mississippi area and surrounding states, Gillies is one of several international students who call MCC home this Fall Semester.

"I'm from Glasgow, Scotland. There are some other international students here," she said, explaining she's come to MCC to play with the Lady Eagles Soccer team and study in the University Transfer Program. Gillies, who is more than 4,000 miles from home, is a midfielder.

"MCC's Liftoff is our version of orientation," said Mandy Hurtt, MCC director of recruiting. "It's important because it gets students here on campus. The incoming students learn about the campus and all its services. They also learn how to be a successful student," she said. The students also meet college personnel and Ivy League Recruiters, so there are familiar faces around when classes start.

Hurtt added, "The biggest thing about Liftoff is for students to know we are here to help them. We want them to succeed and do everything we can to help them find that pathway to graduation."

She said, "We believe this is just the boost our students needed to start the year off on a great start."
