MCC’s Liftoff readies students for Fall Semester 2023

Madison Cunningham talks to MCC staffer Lauren Stokes about scholarship opportunities at MCC during the Liftoff session.

The rain didn't dampen the efforts or spirits of Meridian Community College staffers in getting incoming first-year students ready for the fall semester with the latest Liftoff session.

"MCC's Liftoff is our version of orientation," said Mandy Hurtt, director of recruiting. "It's important because it gets students here on campus. The incoming students learn about the campus and all its services. They also learn how to be a successful student," she said.

That was Madison Cunningham's takeaway from the event. "I learned where everything was and how to get to everyone," the 18-year-old Quitman resident said.

Cunningham is looking forward to the fall semester's start on Aug. 14. "I've always wanted to come to MCC; I knew I'd get what I needed for my basics," she said. "I never thought of going to another community college."

The new MCC student will be studying in the University Transfer Program and plans to continue her education to pursue a career in clinical pharmacy and do research. “I've always wanted to help people, so that will be my way of helping," she said.

Hurtt added, "The biggest thing about Liftoff is for students to know we are here to help them. We want them to succeed and do everything we can to help them find that pathway to graduation."

Additional sessions are planned for July 20 and Aug. 10.
