Dearman urges MCC students to build grit, mindset during LEAD session

Lt. Tim Dearman of the Meridian Community College Campus Police encouraged students to develop resilience and strong habits during the March Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) session hosted by MCC Student Activities.
Dearman, who also serves as a campus safety coordinator, spoke about the role mindset plays in achieving success in this presentation he called his “Tim Talk.” He told students that while challenges are unavoidable, their response to those challenges makes the difference.
“Every person in this room will face adversity,” Dearman said. “What matters is whether you rise to it.”
Throughout the session, Dearman emphasized persistence, grit, and discipline. He explained that success is not about talent alone, but about continuing to show up and put in the work each day.
“Many people quit not because they failed, but because success took longer than they expected,” he said.
Dearman shared personal experiences from his career, including overcoming a serious injury and learning as a law enforcement trainer. He said those moments helped shape his approach to leadership and teaching.
“Failure is part of the process that builds success,” he said.
He also encouraged students to take responsibility for their choices and actions.
“What you allow is what will continue,” Dearman said.
Dearman closed by reminding students that success is built over time through consistent effort and small daily wins.
“Keep showing up,” he said. “That’s how you move forward.”
The LEAD program is held monthly and is designed to help students grow as leaders both inside and outside the classroom. Each session highlights a different topic that supports personal and professional development. The final session for Spring Semester 2026 is April 22 at 1 p.m. in the Quave Student Life Center.
