MCC students learn about leadership, belonging in LEAD session
Speaker Von Gordan listens to students during the LEAD session.
During a Leadership Effectiveness and Development (LEAD) session led by Von Gordan, executive director of the Mississippi-based Alluvial Collective, Meridian Community College students explored the power of connection and belonging.
Gordan shared insights on building strong relationships and creating spaces where people feel they belong. He emphasized that authentic leadership is built on a foundation of respect and decency.
“Great intellect is appreciated when it stands on a foundation of decency and respect,” Gordan said. “But when intellect and competence are built on disrespect and humiliation, they are often despised. That’s an important lesson for students to understand as they grow into leadership roles.”
Freshman Britteny Battle, 24, of Jackson, said the session helped her understand how belonging shapes leadership.
“He talked about how to navigate in a community,” Battle said. “It really connected with me.”
MCC Campus Life Director Marion Whiting said the message resonates with students.
“As a student, I participated in a leadership and growth program with Von as the leader,” Whiting said. “He was a great mentor to me, and it’s rewarding to see him now helping our students.”
Gordan encouraged students to recognize that everyone thrives in spaces where they feel they belong. “That is one of the most important things they can understand as future leaders,” he said.
MCC’s Leadership Effectiveness and Development program session, held monthly and open to all, helps students grow as leaders by providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals. The next LEAD session is Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. in the Quave Center.
