LEAD session focuses on financial wellness for students

Students at Meridian Community College gained practical advice for managing money and planning for their futures during this month’s Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) session.
Hosted by the MCC Student Activities, the LEAD session featured Jada McKinion and Haley Scott from Citizens National Bank. The two speakers shared tips on budgeting, saving, and building credit, all aimed at helping students make wise financial choices.
McKinion and Scott explained checking accounts, how credit scores work, and why they matter. They also talked about the importance of paying bills on time, limiting debt, and setting financial goals early in life.
David Watkins, 18, a freshman from Philadelphia studying in MCC’s Media Production Program, attended the LEAD session for the first time.
“I learned how to build a credit score for the future,” Watkins said of his takeaway from the session. Watkins said the information helped him better understand how today’s financial decisions can impact long term goals.
The LEAD program is held monthly and is designed to help students grow as leaders both inside and outside the classroom. Each session highlights a different topic that supports personal and professional development. The next session is March 25 at 1 p.m. in the Quave Student Life Center. Lt. Tim Dearman with MCC Campus Police will be the guest speaker.
