MCC alumnus shares lessons on dressing for success
Meridian Community College alumnus Dyson Williams returned to campus with a message
for students: first impressions matter, and dressing professionally does not have
to be complicated or expensive.
Williams, a 2022 graduate of MCC’s software program and a suit specialist at Dillard’s, was the featured speaker for the College’s first Leadership and Educational Development, or LEAD, session.
His presentation focused on dressing for success, from understanding different levels of professional attire to building a versatile wardrobe on a budget.
“When you meet someone, your appearance can actually do a lot to set the tone for the whole interaction,” Williams said.
He told students that professional dress can help build confidence and credibility, particularly during job interviews, presentations, graduations, and other important events.
Williams also encouraged students to plan ahead. Formal clothing often needs alterations, he said, and waiting until the last minute can limit choices and increase costs.
“You don’t have to spend more money,” he said. “You can make a bunch of different outfits with just a few pieces.”
Williams’ interest in professional clothing developed unexpectedly. When he began working at Dillard’s, he said he did not know how to tie a tie or the what the differences were among various styles of dress shirts, pants, and formalwear.
“I had to learn all of this stuff on the spot,” he said.
Now, he uses that experience to help customers find clothing that fits well and suits the occasion.
During a question-and-answer session, audience members asked about professional colors, graduation attire, socks, tailoring, and shopping tips.
Williams’ biggest recommendation was simple: everyone should have at least one dependable professional outfit ready for important occasions.
“You might not wear it all the time, but you’ll have it when you need it,” he said.
