MCCer of the Month: James Runnels

“I really like the feeling that we directly serve the community.”
That’s what James Runnels, Meridian Community College’s systems analyst, said when he was asked what he likes best about MCC.
Runnels continued, “I’ve always believed that education is one of the greatest gifts that someone can receive, and the fact that every person at the institution contributes to this mission gives me a sense of purpose.”
Runnels, who is nearing his fourth work anniversary at the College, was named MCCer of the Month for July. The MCC Foundation sponsors this monthly award to exemplify the College's hardworking employees who go above and beyond their day-to-day duties. Honorees are peer-nominated. In addition to a commemorative plaque, recipients are gifted $250.
Helping others comes naturally for Runnels. His first year after earning his bachelor’s degree in information science from Mississippi State University found Runnels working at MCC’s Information Technology (IT) helpdesk. “Every day is rewarding in some way. Whether it’s the daily problem-solving, working with great people, or helping students in what ways we can, I always have a reason to be here,” he said.
Others recognize his dedication. “James is highly responsive to requests, often going the extra mile to assist with troubleshooting, ensuring minimal downtime, and helping colleagues with technology-related challenges,” said Michael Thompson, vice president for academic affairs.
“In addition to his technical expertise, James consistently demonstrates a positive attitude, reliability, and professionalism that make him a standout member of our team,” Thompson added.
One colleague described Runnels this way: “Calm. Steady. Polite. Problem Solver. Dedicated. Good guy.”
“James started his career at the helpdesk, giving kind and quick assistance, often when the student or MCC employee was at their wits' end about a computer issue. He has advanced in his career to systems analyst and is still as helpful and accessible as he was when he worked on the helpdesk,” the colleague added.
A native of Meridian, Runnels said what motivates him in the day-to-day are the challenges that need to be overcome. “It makes everything a little more exciting. In a more long-term sense, I like feeling that I’m growing my skills and developing professionally,” he said.
Runnels’ family – primarily his mom and grandmother – is a big part of his life, and “I love them dearly. I would not be the person I am today without the guidance of my mom.”
