Thanks to the creative efforts of a Meridian Community College Graphic Design Technology Program freshman, newly created T-shirts will serve as a reminder about the importance of flood insurance.

Nineteen-year-old Meridian resident Ayden Balentine created winning art with a message by using a graphic of a house on a Viking-style war boat and incorporating the phrase, Don't Fight The Flood Alone: Buy Flood Insurance.

Each year, the Lauderdale County's Permit Office and the Program for Public Information (PPI) present an outreach program to get students involved in creating a graphic and slogan to promote the importance of flood insurance. The PPI committee judges the works submitted, and the winners are decided.

"This is something that we do to get the word out there about flood insurance,” said Michael Marsh with the Lauderdale County Permit Office about the campaign and the call for designs and slogans. "We greatly appreciate the participation each year, and it’s an important topic," he said.

MCC Graphic Design Technology Program Coordinator and Instructor Daniel Ethridge was pleased for the opportunity for students in his program to compete in this design and slogan competition. "Providing students with real-world challenges and opportunities to showcase their skills enhances their education and prepares them for success in their future careers," he said.

Balentine sees graphic design as a career path for him. "I enjoy creating things for other people," he added.
