MCC to applaud Spring 2023 graduates in two ceremonies

Graduation 2023

Meridian Community College officials are gearing up to celebrate the accomplishments of its Spring 2023 graduating class in ceremonies for Career and Technical Education students and University Transfer students on Friday, May 12, in Evangel Temple, Meridian.

The Career and Technical Education ceremony begins at 11 a.m.; the University Transfer ceremony starts at 3 p.m.

Some 470 students are candidates for graduation. "This year, we have more students participating in the graduation ceremonies, and I'm excited about that," said Deanna Smith, dean of student affairs. "Graduating from MCC is a big deal, and we think graduation is an opportunity to celebrate graduates' hard work, dedication, and accomplishments and to recognize the impact they will make on their communities," she said.

“We're excited to see them find their wings," Smith added.

The first ceremony, for CTE students, will celebrate the achievements of students who have completed programs in health education, nursing and precision machining engineering, commercial truck driving, construction trades, culinary arts, and others.

For the University Transfer graduation, students will be applauded for their work in completing general education requirements and will be transferring to a four-year university to continue their studies. Also, during this event, H.M. Ivy and The Phil Hardin Foundation scholarship recipients will be announced.

Both ceremonies will also congratulate the 41 students named to the Circle of Excellence and salute them for their academic achievement, leadership, community service, and spirit. MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner said MCC has a long history of outstanding graduates. The Circle of Excellence is one way the College recognizes these students who excelled at MCC. "These students have made an impact on this place, and we look forward to watching them take flight and impact the world," Dr. Huebner said.

Smith noted College officials are thankful for the Evangel Temple to serve as the venue for this May ceremony. "It's a beautiful facility," she said.

The Evangel Temple will also be the setting for the College's Practical Nursing Program's pinning on Thursday, May 11, at 2 p.m. The Associate Degree Nursing pinning ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 12, in the Evangel Temple.
