Dr. Samuel Jones inspires faculty, staff at MCC’s Fall Convocation

Meridian Community College faculty and staff began the new academic year with a message from Dr. Samuel Jones, CPS, a leadership coach, author, and former college basketball coach, during the College’s 2025 Convocation.
Jones, who grew up in the Mississippi Delta town of Mound Bayou and overcame a childhood stutter, shared personal stories, life lessons, and practical strategies designed to help MCC employees start the year with purpose and energy.
“I can’t stand before people and tell them to do things I’m not doing myself,” Jones said. “So, I had to take a deep look in the mirror and reconnect with the foundation of who I am.”
Through humor, audience participation, and examples, Jones encouraged faculty and staff to consider three questions in their work and personal lives: Why should I get this information? How can I use it? When can I use it? He also emphasized that every MCCer is a leader, regardless of their title, and leadership is about using influence to create an environment where people can develop their gifts.
Jones reminded the audience to value what they already have, much like his grandmother taught him in the Delta home where he dreamed of his future. He closed with a story about a man who painted a portrait of that home for him — a reminder that the work educators do leaves lasting impressions.
“Your students need more than just your subject matter,” Jones said. “They need your encouragement, your life lessons, and your belief in them. That’s what makes a difference.”
