O.N.E. connects students to career paths at MCC

Local ninth-grade students got a hands-on glimpse into the surgical technology world as they gathered around a laparoscopic simulator, watching classmates operate the camera and scissors while practicing the precision required for minimally invasive procedures.
That was just one of many interactive experiences during Meridian Community College’s Experience the O.N.E. (Occupations Not Usually Explored by Non-Traditional Students).
Approximately 65 students from Russell Christian Academy, Pentecostal Christian Academy, West Lauderdale, Southeast Lauderdale, and Northeast Lauderdale high schools explored a wide range of MCC’s career and technical programs during the event.
Designed to introduce students to career paths they may not typically consider, Experience the O.N.E. provided an up-close look at both health care and technical fields. Allied health programs featured included Associate Degree Nursing, Medical Lab Technology, Surgical Technology, Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting, Health Care Assisting, Emergency Medical Technology, and Paramedic. Students also explored Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Technology, Welding and Cutting Technology, Diesel Mechanic Technology, Precision Machining Technology, Commercial Truck Driving, and Utility Lineman programs.
“The Experience the O.N.E. program helps students connect what they’re learning in high school to real-world, hands-on careers,” said Tiereni White, MCC recruiting coordinator.
White added that the event is especially valuable for students who are still undecided about their future, allowing them to explore options and make more informed decisions.
The day also included a presentation by guest speaker Drew Calhoun, clinical educator with Ochsner Rush Health, along with an awards ceremony.
