MCC alum returns to help others get their start

Heather Dearing has returned to Meridian Community College, this time as a Smart Start instructor in the Adult Education Department.

An MCC graduate, Dearing said returning to the College feels like coming home.

“This is where I got my start and received the education and support that helped shape where I am today,” she said. “It means a lot to be back, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to help others get their start, reach their goals, and see what they’re capable of.”

Dearing teaches Smart Start Pathway classes Monday through Thursday in morning and afternoon sessions in the Ralph E. Young, Jr., Center for Adult Basic Education. The course focuses on career readiness, financial literacy, communication and work ethic.

She said she is most looking forward to building relationships with students and encouraging them as they work toward their goals.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone believe in themselves, reach a goal they once thought was out of reach and knowing you had a small part in helping them get there,” Dearing said.

Dearing earned an associate of arts degree from MCC in 2015 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Mississippi State University. Her areas of study included psychology, counseling education, and business administration.

Before returning to MCC, she worked at Mississippi State University as a program support specialist for the Physician Assistant Program.

Dearing and her husband, Carney, also an MCC alum, have been married for 20 years. They have four children and one granddaughter. She enjoys audiobooks, searching for antiques and thrift finds, and spending time with family and friends.

One piece of advice continues to guide her.

“Sometimes the hardest seasons of our lives become the greatest lessons and the most rewarding moments,” Dearing said.
