ELC members hone their communication skills

Mandi Stanley makes a point to members of the recent Eagle Leadership Convocation session.

Learning how to think and speak on your feet quickly and confidently is vital in today’s world.

Mandi Stanley, a certified professional speaker (CPS), works primarily with business leaders who want to boost their professional images by becoming better speakers and writers. She led the latest Meridian Community College Eagle Leadership Convocation (ELC) Class session.

Communication is a crucial element of leadership skills, said Stanley, in explaining her presentation on Communications Strategies. Organizing talking points, paying attention to the audience, and reading the audience are among the elements needed in delivering relevant and remembered presentations.

“I tell everyone in the program presentation is a gift you’re giving your audiences,” Stanley said.

Fewer than 9 percent of all worldwide speakers have earned the CPS designation, and Stanley is the first Mississippian to receive this honor through the National Speakers Association. She is the author of The No-Panic Plan for Presenters: An A-to-Z Checklist for Speaking Confidently & Compellingly Anywhere, Anytime,

ELC is an academic year-long professional development and leadership program comprising 10 MCC faculty and staff members: Shaquita Hopson Alfonso, associate director of veterans and military services and C2C coach; Laureta Chislom, executive assistant to the president; Tim Cole, director of custodial and support services; Jamila Brown Coleman, adult basic education instructor; Eric Griffin, Commercial Truck Driving program instructor; Christopher Haralson, athletic trainer and sports information director; Jeanette Howell, support services coordinator; Angie Pickard, human resources director; Erin Richardson, instructional design specialist; and Terrell Taylor, art instructor and Casteel Gallery director.

The next ELC session is on Dec. 5, where Dr. Lavon Gray will speak on Conflict Resolution, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving.
