Nothing but the tooth – and teeth

In observing National Children’s Dental Health Month, Meridian Community College Dental Hygiene Technology Program students visited five Meridian Public School District and three Lauderdale County School District school first graders demonstrating good oral hygiene habits.

“Our students helped educate more than 700 students on keeping their teeth healthy,” said Kelli Bounds, MCC Dental Hygiene instructor.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cavities are one of the most chronic childhood diseases in this country. More than 50 percent of youths from ages six to eight have had a cavity in their baby teeth, and the same amount of kids from ages 12-19 have had one in their adult teeth. Dental experts noted that teaching children about good oral hygiene – which includes brushing teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist – is vital in keeping them healthy.
