MCC grad Cynthia Roberts: A journey of passion and perseverance

Cynthia Roberts, a 40-year-old from Meridian, marked another stepping stone in her nearly two decades in the medical field – she received her certificate in Practical Nursing from Meridian Community during the College's Summer Commencement 2024.

"I've been in healthcare for 18 years as a certified nurse and medical assistant. It's always been a passion for me," said Roberts. "One day, I decided it was time to pursue my dreams. I'm so excited and so blessed to be here," she said as she waited to receive her Practical Nursing pin.

Roberts' path in healthcare began at MCC through the Health Care Assistant Program, where she graduated in December 2006. Choosing that career path was a personal one. "Growing up, I had always had health problems. Watching the nurses who took care of me, I always wanted to give back the same care to others going through similar situations."

Last year, Roberts started the Practical Nursing Program at MCC while seven months pregnant. Despite hardships, including giving birth to a daughter during Fall Break and returning to school the following week, she persevered. "It's been challenging, but with the support of my family and God, I got through it," she said. While in the program, Roberts faced personal losses, including her grandmother's and uncle's passing, yet she focused on her goal.

Roberts’ family has been a cornerstone of her support system. Her mother, Rosie Roberts, has been instrumental in helping care for her daughters, Jasmine, 8, and Gabrielle, 10 months. Her big brother, Steven Hawkins, cousin Samantha Roberts, and best friend Regina Lewis, a peer in the program, have also been vital sources of motivation and support.

Reflecting on her time at MCC, Roberts credited the college's impact on her life. "MCC helped me grow into the person I am today in healthcare. Although I had obtained other degrees, my passion had always been healthcare. I knew MCC was the right place to continue my journey."

Looking ahead, Roberts aims to become a registered nurse and plans to return to MCC to further her education after gaining additional experience in the practical nursing area.

"I'm just blessed. Blessed to be here today. Blessed that I've accomplished a goal – a dream of mine. That's all I can say."
